LA NOCHE N° 1 in Transglobal World Music Chart and Lista Ibérica de Músicas de Raíz
Although Radio Tarifa was known for its live bands, there were actually three of us developing the ideas in the studio: Benjamín Escoriza as singer and lyricist; wind player Vincent Molino and me as director, arranger, producer, and guitarist and percussionist;
The album “La Noche” was completed over three years, in 2022, 2023, and 2024.
Many of the tracks were recorded in my small home studio in Hamburg.
We didn't have a record label back then, and working alone and without rushing worked out very well.
Vincent recorded the wind instruments in Madrid and sent them to me online.
We were able to recover an old recording of Benjamín Escoriza's voice from 2003, singing the title track of the album: "La Noche."
Vincent also contributed several recordings:
Two of his own compositions, one with Blanca Paloma's voice, "La niña del almendro viejo" (The Girl from the Old Almond Tree), and another with his own voice, "Songe obscur" (Obscur Song). He also included a medieval polyphony by Francesco Landini, "Quel sol che raggia," also sung by Blanca Paloma.
Juanmi Cabral, a musician from the group "La Banda Morisca," gave us one of his songs, "Samai Sintigo," a soleá sung and arranged by him over a 10 x 8 Arabic rhythm, Samai Zaqil.
José González, a flamenco singer from Conil, had worked for ten years as a teacher in Athens, where he had collected and translated two traditional Greek songs that he sings on the album: "Sabah" and "Ay ojos negros."
Javi Castrillón, a flamenco singer from Vejer, contributes his flamenco singing to three songs: "Me preguntas," "Tarantos," and "Soleá del desamor."
Eliseo Parra, a traditional singer from Valladolid, sings some Castilian and Extremaduran verses in "Picaba en vano."
Mizuki Wildenhahn, from Hamburg, sings a Japanese folk song about the cherry blossom, "Sakura."
Aida Brandes-Hargrove shares with me the creation of an instrumental piece, “Digiphony”
I sing one of my songs: “Luz”
There are nine singers in total on this album. A luxury for me as a producer.
And finally, we were fortunate enough to be signed by Gilles Fruchaux to his Buda Musique record label, where his love for music is palpable.
