About us:
Radio Tarifa was founded in Madrid as a result of the meeting of three musicians: Faín Sánchez Dueñas (Valladolid), Vincent Molino (Montpellier), and Benjamín Escoriza (Granada).
Faín and Vincent met while playing in a medieval music group in 1985. They also shared an interest in Arabic and Mediterranean music. Later, they met Benjamín. They liked his voice, his stage presence, and the special poetry of his lyrics.
In 1991, Faín began recording a homemade demo on a 4-track cassette with traditional songs and other pieces of his own.
The repertoire is a reflection of the different styles he has been playing and listening to over the years: flamenco, jazz, Arabic music, medieval music, African music. But now with Benjamín's singing.
It is also the result of the music Faín and Vincent have shared.
On the demo, Faín conducts, arranges, and plays the strings and percussion. Benjamín sings and writes lyrics. Vincent plays wind instruments. Thus begins Radio Tarifa.
The recordings were completed in 1992 in the studio of producer Juan Alberto Arteche, who released the first CD, "Rumba Argelina," on his label "Música sin Fin" in 1993.
Other musicians also collaborated: Javier Paxariño, Javier Ruibal, Gerardo Nuñez, etc.
And it worked. In Spain, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom, the CD "Rumba Argelina" was played on the radio.
The multinational BMG bought the rights in 1994.
Radio Tarifa was praised by international critics as a representative of the nascent "World Music" movement.
Faín organized his first band, adapting the album's songs for live performances. International tours and concerts at major festivals began.
Over the next eleven years, he assembled various live bands and directed the recordings of three more albums.
Radio Tarifa was nominated for several awards from the BBC, the Latin Grammys, and more.
In 2004, Fain, exhausted, stopped touring.
In 2006, the last live band disbanded, and RADIO TARIFA ceased its activities.
That year, Benjamín began his solo musical career, but died of cancer in 2012.
